HOPEFUL Michael van Gerwen is confident that the King will reclaim his title at the Palace this week.
In his first afternoon match at the World Championships in over ten years, the Dutch darts sensation overcame the skilled Callan Rydz 5-3.
The match was exhilarating, featuring thirty-one 180s across the eight sets – with 17 from Rydz – as both players achieved averages exceeding 103 and successfully converted over 44% of their doubles.
Van Gerwen will face Chris Dobey on Thursday night in a best-of-11 sets clash, vying for a record fourth world title at Ally Pally, six years after his last triumph.
Phil Taylor claimed three of his sixteen world championship titles in this iconic Grade II-listed venue in North London.
He commented, “A return of the king? That would be delightful. I think people have their suspicions about that. I welcome challenges.
“With confidence in my abilities, a royal comeback is certain.
“Callan performed admirably and consistently landed those 180s. It could be quite frustrating at times.
“The match had it all – excitement, 180s; it was a thrill. Playing in such matches brings me great joy.
“I believe it was one of my best performances in quite some time. He kept me alert the whole match. I felt somewhat contained.

“I want to celebrate victories every night, but it demands constant effort.
“This was a fantastic match – but consistency is crucial.
“I must maintain this level; otherwise, an early exit could occur.
“The PDC decides the match pairings. Naturally, with rising talent Luke Littler, I expected an afternoon encounter. I understand the reasoning. But it might work to my advantage.
