The agreement comes as Plymouth sits at the bottom of the Championship standings.

Argyle have not won for nine matches and are currently four points adrift of safety.

Despite the situation, both the team and Rooney released optimistic statements following their split on New Year’s Eve.

However, fans quickly noticed an unsettling detail on their official Plymouth Argyle calendar for the upcoming year.

This well-liked item was given as a Christmas gift by many supporters of the club.

Given Rooney’s exit, numerous fans were shocked to find his image prominently displayed for January.

Wayne Rooney’s Landmark Career

WAYNE Rooney captured the football world’s attention when he made his debut in 2002 with Everton.

He quickly made history as the club’s youngest-ever goalscorer at just 16 years and 342 days and was honored as BBC’s Young Sports Personality of the Year.

In 2004, he transferred to Manchester United, where he spent 13 successful years, playing 559 matches and scoring 253 goals, becoming the club’s all-time leading scorer.

After his tenure at United, Rooney returned to Everton for one season, before continuing his career with D.C. United and Derby County for a season each.

Besides his extensive club career, Rooney is recognized as England’s second-highest goalscorer with 53 goals in 120 appearances, standing only behind Harry Kane.

Upon retirement, this England icon shifted into management.

He took charge at Derby County in 2020, successfully preventing relegation in his first year.

However, after facing a 21-point deduction in the following season, he was unable to keep the team afloat and subsequently left.

Rooney then completed a 15-month spell leading D.C. United in MLS, departing after a disappointing conclusion to the 2023 regular season.

In October 2023, he controversially accepted the role at Birmingham, taking over a team placed sixth in the Championship.

However, after managing 15 matches with nine losses and just two wins, he was relieved of his duties in January 2024, with the club sitting in 20th position, ultimately leading to their relegation by the season’s end.

He returned to management in May with Plymouth Argyle but managed only five wins in 25 matches, leading him to be unemployed once more.

In today’s announcement regarding Rooney’s departure, the club stated: “Plymouth Argyle can confirm that the club and Head Coach Wayne Rooney have mutually agreed to part ways with immediate effect.

“Along with Rooney, Assistant Head Coach Mike Phelan and first team coach Simon Ireland will also leave the club.

“First team coach Kevin Nancekivell and Club Captain Joe Edwards will manage the team for our Sky Bet Championship match against Bristol City on New Year’s Day. Daryl Flahavan will continue as Goalkeeping coach.

“We thank Wayne and his team for their contributions and wish them success in future endeavors.

“The club will keep fans updated regarding our new first team management staff in due course.”

Rooney also shared his own statement, expressing: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Board of Plymouth Argyle Football Club, particularly Simon Hallett and Neil Dewsnip, with whom I established great relationships.

“I’m thankful to all the staff for their warm welcome and for making the club such a fantastic place, and to the players and fans for their support during my time as Head Coach. I wish them all the best moving forward.

“To the Green Army, thank you for making the games at Home Park truly memorable; these are moments we will hold dear forever.

“I would like to express my gratitude to my coaching staff Kevin Nancekivell, Simon Ireland, Darryl Flahavan, and Mike Phelan for their expertise, commitment, and support.

“Plymouth Argyle will always occupy a special place in my heart, and I will continue to follow and cheer for their outcomes.”
