REAL MADRID has quietly opted to change the name of their iconic Santiago Bernabeu stadium without notifying fans.
Los Blancos have been gracing this impressive venue located in the heart of the Spanish capital since 1947.
With a capacity of 78,297, the Santiago Bernabeu has been the backdrop for remarkable moments in football history.
It was the first stadium in Europe to host both a Euros and a World Cup final.
In 2019, the Santiago Bernabeu underwent extensive renovations amounting to £1 billion.
New features included an impressive retractable roof, alongside a hotel and shopping center outside the stadium.
However, Real’s stadium is now being referred to by its newly adopted name.
This alteration has been so subtle that even fans have not noticed it.
According to Spanish outlet Marca, the Santiago Bernabeu is now officially just known as the Bernabeu.
The management reportedly eliminated the first part of its full name for commercial purposes.

Initially named to honor former player and president Santiago Bernabeu, the stadium has allowed fans to celebrate the rich heritage of the club.
Currently, those in charge are said to prefer a more streamlined name.
It is believed that omitting ‘Santiago’ to simply call the stadium ‘Bernabeu’ fits with Real’s modern vision going forward.
This rebranding potentially opens up future sponsorship opportunities.
At this moment, there are no plans to follow the lead of rivals Barcelona, who now play at the Spotify Camp Nou.
However, if Real finds a necessity for additional revenue in the future, discussions regarding possible naming rights may be brought before shareholders.
