Mamelodi Sundowns’ head coach Miguel Cardoso acknowledges that his players have not yet reached his standards, but he believes they will eventually understand his vision.
This statement comes despite Sundowns having a perfect record in the three matches Cardoso has overseen, winning all without conceding a single goal.
The Portuguese manager succeeded Manqoba Mngqithi, a move that raised eyebrows throughout the football community.
Although Sundowns currently lead the Betway Premiership, the club’s management has voiced concerns regarding the team’s direction.
The decision to part ways with Mngqithi was made following disappointing draws in the first two CAF Champions League group stage matches—a tournament they are keen to win—and a subpar defeat against Magesi FC in the Carling Knockout Cup.
Following their narrow victory against AmaZulu—sealed by Iqraam Rayners’ late header at Moses Mabhida Stadium—Cardoso stated that the team has yet to achieve his expected standards. Nevertheless, he remains hopeful that they will improve over time.
“In essence, the team hasn’t hit the level I aspire to,” he remarked.
“If our performances had matched our ambitions and capabilities, this would not just be about handling the present circumstances.
“In the match against AmaZulu, we played our third game within a short period, and typically it’s not in the second match that players feel fatigued. We appeared sluggish, less proactive, and too reactive, likely because of a lack of energy.
“We’re following a demanding schedule, with our next match against Richards Bay in just three days.
“The team will undoubtedly progress as they gain confidence and adhere to the core principles we embrace, which is crucial.”
Sundowns will face Richards Bay at King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday at 15:30.
