DARTS figurehead Barry Hearn recently underwent a prostate surgery just prior to the PDC World Darts Championship.
The BIGGER 180 initiative introduced by sponsor Paddy Power has successfully raised significant funds for their chosen charity, Prostate Cancer UK.
For each 180 scored throughout the 16-day event, £1,000 is added to a running total — there were 914 scored during the past championship, but the Irish bookmaker chose to round it up to £1 million.
The goal is to encourage at least 180,000 viewers to assess their risk for the illness by taking a quick 30-second online quiz.
The president of Matchroom Sport, 76-year-old Hearn, revealed that he faced a serious prostate issue that required intervention and stated: “The campaign is outstanding; it’s incredible.”
“Last year, the drive urged fans to ‘Get checked’.”
“I took that advice, and two months back, I underwent a successful prostate surgery.”
“I’m very conscious of my health, but the campaign gave me the nudge I needed.”
“It’s the motivation all men should have. What’s keeping you? It’s free.”
“What are you… irrational? Do you really want to endanger your life? Honestly, it’s foolish NOT to take action. We should not be reckless.”
“Sometimes we get preoccupied with other issues, but that was the impetus I needed to take further steps.”
“I noticed a problem, so I had to address it. And as you can see, I still look terrific!”
Hearn, the leading sports promoter in the UK, has experienced two heart attacks.
The latest incident occurred in April 2020, and he underwent emergency surgery at the onset of the Covid pandemic to have two stents implanted, which help maintain the openness of blood vessels.
