Mamelodi Sundowns’ head coach Miguel Cardoso is not concerned that only one player has been able to score in his first three matches with the team.

During this period, Iqraam Rayners has been the sole scorer, netting a late winner against AmaZulu at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Tuesday.

The ex-Stellenbosch forward also found the back of the net during Sundowns’ victory over Raja Casablanca in the CAF Champions League at Cardoso’s first match in charge.

Rayners repeated this performance when Sundowns played against his previous team last weekend in the Betway Premiership at Cape Town Stadium.

“No, not particularly worried,” Cardoso remarked in Durban.

“I would be worried if we were not generating multiple chances as we did in the last few matches. We are entering the box with many players, and we had plenty of scoring opportunities. I hope this will lead to more goals. I believe we will see goals from a variety of players soon.

“We have numerous players capable of scoring. They will eventually find their rhythm, and while Iqraam should continue to score, others are also ready to contribute to the scoresheet at any time.”

This marks the seventh consecutive match in which Rayners has scored, having previously netted for Bafana Bafana against South Sudan in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, against Magesi in the Carling Knockout Cup final, and in games versus Sekhukhune United and FAR Rabat.

The victory over AmaZulu brought Sundowns to a total of 27 points, placing them at the top of the Betway Premiership after 10 matches, three points clear of second-placed Orlando Pirates, who defeated Marumo Gallants 8-1 at Orlando Stadium on Tuesday.

Despite the win, Sundowns had to manage with a player less after goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was shown a red card for handling the ball outside the penalty area.

Referee Masixole Bambiso had no choice but to issue the red card to the Bafana Bafana captain. However, the CAF Inter-Club Player of the Year and CAF Goalkeeper of the Year celebrated with his teammates joyously at the final whistle.

After the match in Durban, Sundowns returned to Johannesburg to allow their players and staff to spend Christmas with their families.

The seven-time consecutive league champions will head back to Durban on 28 December for their upcoming match against Richards Bay at King Zwelithini Stadium.
