AmaZulu co-coach Vusi Vilakazi has cautioned new recruits Sandile Mthethwa and Bongani Zungu that they are joining a well-established team and should be prepared for fierce competition for starting positions.

The pair, previously with Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, signed with Usuthu last week to strengthen the team’s defense and midfield after becoming free agents.

Mthethwa was released by Pirates, while Zungu has been without a club after departing Sundowns during the off-season.

Zungu expressed that taking time to evaluate his options was beneficial for his mental well-being.

While the team is currently positioned 13th on the Betway Premiership table, Vilakazi pointed out their recent strong form, mentioning that they have secured victory in three of their last four league matches, aiding them in avoiding the relegation zone.

“I am confident they will contribute positively to our setup,” Vilakazi remarked.

“Nonetheless, they need to recognize that they are joining a team that isn’t starting from the ground up; the competition for a place in the lineup is fierce.

“We have faith in them, which is why we brought them here. We believe their experiences will significantly enhance our squad. Additionally, we have a range of young players who will benefit from learning alongside them.

“Therefore, they are vital not only in terms of performance but also in assisting younger players to meet the standards we aspire to.”

Due to his previous registration with Pirates at the start of the season, Mthethwa will not be eligible to play until the January transfer window opens.

Zungu, who had no prior club during the initial half of the season, is available for immediate participation, contingent on his fitness level, as he began training with the team on Friday.

AmaZulu is set to face Sundowns at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Tuesday at 15:00.
