JAMIE CARRAGHER faced backlash for allegedly being “extremely unfair” during a heated discussion about Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future with Liverpool.
The right-back played a crucial role in his team’s remarkable 6-3 win over Tottenham on Sunday, helping the Reds maintain their lead at the top of the league as Christmas approaches.
Alexander-Arnold has emerged as one of the key players for Arne Slot this season.
Nevertheless, his future remains uncertain as his contract approaches its final six months.
The defender has yet to finalize an extension with Liverpool and can begin negotiations with foreign clubs starting next month.
Real Madrid is said to be leading the race to acquire Alexander-Arnold’s services, especially since he would come without a transfer fee.
In a recent discussion on Sky Sports, Carragher remarked on why Alexander-Arnold wouldn’t consider a short-term deal with Liverpool to assure the club receives some form of transfer fee.
This comment led to a vigorous on-air debate with fellow former Liverpool player Jamie Redknapp, who characterized Carragher’s viewpoint as “extremely unfair” regarding Alexander-Arnold’s current situation.
Carragher opened up with: “As a local player, it’s a long time to reside in that city. Trent has dedicated 20 years to the club.
“It wouldn’t be right for Liverpool supporters to feel like, ‘Wait a minute, we are on top, what else do you want?’”

In rebuttal, Redknapp contended: “I think it’s negligence from Liverpool to find themselves in this situation.
“If that’s where we are, we should respect his decision. A young player, who has given so much, should have the freedom to explore different cultures if he desires.
“In the locker room, I would love for him to commit, but if Real is on the table, how can you possibly turn that down?”
Carragher responded: “If I were advising Trent, I would stress the significance of the free transfer.
“The sentiment of leaving without any compensation raises concerns about how we might replace him. I would propose he signs with a reasonable buyout clause, and if Real wants him in a year…”
However, Redknapp countered, saying: “You cannot instruct him to sign a contract. What if he faces an injury post-signing? He has the opportunity for a lucrative deal with Real and a chance to experience something different.
“I fully support whatever choice he makes, as he has consistently put in his best for Liverpool.”
Carragher concluded: “I’m merely voicing the sentiments of Liverpool fans, whom I interact with daily on the streets of Liverpool.
“Despite our differences, it’s their feelings that truly matter.”
