Orlando Pirates’ head coach, Jose Riveiro, has indicated that coaching a national team is not in his immediate plans, even after his triumphant leadership of the All-Stars to victory in the Carling Cup.
Nonetheless, he did leave a hint of possibility when he remarked, “Who knows what the future might hold for me?”
Riveiro skillfully guided a squad composed of players from Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Pirates to clinch their second consecutive Carling Cup title at Orlando Stadium this past Saturday. Two Chiefs players, Naledi Hlongwane (who netted two goals) and Samkelo Zwane, were particularly impressive in the first half, overpowering Magesi FC and leading to the exit of their coach, Clinton Larsen.
In light of his experience overseeing players from various clubs, Riveiro was queried about his aspirations to coach a national team in the future.
This inquiry may seem unconventional at this point, but Riveiro has achieved remarkable success with Pirates since his arrival in June 2022, capturing four trophies. Nevertheless, his contract with the club is set to expire at the end of the season.
“Bafana?” he asked, eliciting laughter from the gathered media, with some responding affirmatively while others shook their heads in disagreement.
At present, Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos holds a contract that extends until after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. However, this arrangement could be reconsidered if he fails to ensure qualification for the tournament.
“You never know,” Riveiro remarked. “My full attention is on my current duties, and trust me, there is a lot to manage with Pirates.”
“Traditionally, national team roles have been filled by coaches with more extensive experience and longevity in the field, but this is shifting as we witness younger coaches taking the helm of leading national teams globally.”
“Who knows? I love coaching, and at this moment, I am dedicated to performing my best with Orlando Pirates. When I am asked to coach in this capacity [the All-Stars], I don’t spend much time pondering what the future may bring.”
This latest victory marked Riveiro’s second Carling Cup title with the select team, having been chosen by fans to lead the squad to success against Stellenbosch last season.
