REGIS LE BRIS has recommended that Liverpool transfer target Trey Ogunsuyi continue his development with Sunderland’s promising youth squad.

Arne Slot’s Premier League leaders have recently brought in several talented young players, such as Trey Nyoni, Amara Nallo, and Rio Ngumoha.

At present, Championship promotion hopefuls Sunderland may find it difficult to keep their talented 17-year-old, as Liverpool is considering a January transfer.

The Belgian youth international joined the Stadium of Light eight years ago and secured his first professional contract last January.

Ogunsuyi appears set to follow in the footsteps of Chris Rigg, 17, and Tommy Watson, 18, becoming another youth academy success story for the first team.

He has already been an unused substitute in three matches and has scored 15 goals for Sunderland’s youth teams, capturing the interest of Liverpool.

Ogunsuyi, who is believed to be under contract until 2026, has witnessed his friends and fellow teen Jobe Bellingham thrive under Le Bris’s guidance.

The French coach believes that Wearside is the perfect setting for the forward, who has found the net 15 times in 17 appearances for both the U21s and U18s, to excel.

The Sunderland manager commented: “Yes, I think so. He’s still very young, and undoubtedly Riggy, Tommy, and Jobe set the standards to aspire to at our club.

“Moving to a club with a strong squad necessitates finding the right environment for personal growth.

“I’m not sure. Social media often exaggerates stories, but if we foster the right environment, and the player alongside his family and agents makes wise choices, we can chart a suitable path for him.”

Le Bris acknowledged that targeting new attacking options is “probably” his top priority when the transfer window reopens, but also emphasized that Ogunsuyi is close to becoming a regular part of his team.

Roy Keane made £800 off Sunderland players but lost the dressing room with a training ground trick that quickly backfired

When asked about Ogunsuyi’s readiness for more playing time, he replied: “I can’t say definitively. It hinges on the chances that arise.

“He’s been part of the training sessions, so there is familiarity, both on his end and with the team.

“At times, patience is essential; other times, it can happen swiftly after just a few games. He’s very close to the main squad.”
