Wydad Athletic Club’s head coach, Rulani Mokwena, shared his disappointment after tensions erupted when ASFAR fans threw stones at his players following a 2-2 draw in the Classico on Thursday.

Mokwena’s team missed the chance to move up to second place in the league standings after leading 2-1 at halftime, thanks to goals from Oussama Zemraoui and Mohamed Rayhi, but Youssef El Fahli equalized in the second half.

The Red Castle was reduced to 10 men after former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Abdelmounaim Boutil was shown a red card, and Cassius Mailula provided another assist.

After the match, Mokwena voiced his concerns about the troubling incidents, bringing a stone to his post-match press conference. Additionally, the 37-year-old coach took to social media to express his worries while reaffirming his commitment to the project at Wydad.

“We want to extend our sincere thanks for your unwavering support and dedication. Your passion and loyalty to the team continually inspire us, and your spirit motivates us every single day,” stated Mokwena.

“While we recognize the disappointment and frustration after the recent match, we share in those feelings with you. Our team displayed relentless effort on the field despite encountering numerous obstacles, and at times, the outcomes and events may not genuinely reflect our commitment and spirit. Mistakes are an inevitable aspect of the game, just as they are in life, and it is through overcoming these hurdles that we evolve, both professionally and personally.

“Every member of our team continually demonstrates their dedication and pride in representing this distinguished football club. Even amidst the challenges faced, they consistently give their all, and for that, we are immensely proud and encourage your ongoing support.

“We acknowledge the hardships of the past two years and the effects it has had on all of us. Please know that we are working tirelessly to rebuild our team and seek the success we all yearn for. Now, more than ever, unity is essential—for both players and fans.

“Your unwavering support, love, and encouragement act as the driving force that propels us to overcome adversities and emerge stronger together. Let us stay focused on the common goal of elevating our club to new heights.

“Thank you for being the most extraordinary fans in the world. Your passion and commitment are truly appreciated. Together, let us stand united behind all our players and showcase to the world the true essence of solidarity and support—qualities that only true champions can embody. With heartfelt gratitude and love, let the Wydad spirit shine brightly,” he concluded.
