Renowned South African coach Pitso Mosimane has provided important updates on his future with Esteghlal FC amidst rumors connecting him to major African teams including Moroccan champions Raja Club Athletic and Egyptian giants Zamalek.
The three-time CAF Champions League winner took on the role at The Capital Blues in October under a short-term contract, intended to run until the season’s conclusion, with the goal of helping the Iranian club return to peak performance.
Following a difficult start marked by three straight defeats, Mosimane’s team is now enjoying a six-match unbeaten stretch across all competitions, though their league winning streak was halted by a scoreless draw against Gol Gohar on Monday.
Now, the previous head coach of Al Ahly and Mamelodi Sundowns has clarified his plans moving forward, as his project with the Persian Gulf Pro League side gains significant momentum after a lackluster beginning to the 2024/25 season.
“I’m pleased you asked about the contract because [the day before the Gohar match] I made a mistake. Someone inquired if there had been talks about a new contract, and I responded that no one had reached out to me,” Mosimane remarked.
“I misspoke; while I did have a discussion with the president, we didn’t delve into contract details. He simply expressed his hope for us to renew and asked for my transparency. We’ll see; I’m here and am keen to stay.
“If a contract comes forward, I believe we can discuss it. At the moment, it’s not being offered, but once it is, I won’t hesitate to make a decision. My desire is to remain. I want to play a role in this team; they have the potential to improve – they deserve it,” he continued.
Mosimane also praised his players highly and shared his satisfaction with living in the Middle East, despite concerns about the ongoing conflict with Israel potentially impacting living conditions in Iran.
“You can see they’re performing well, passing effectively; it’s a far cry from when I first came. They are energetic, eager to win, and putting in the effort. I’m not worried about other nations; I have no issues living in Iran,” affirmed the 60-year-old coach.
“We face no challenges with social life or lifestyle; my focus is on football. If football is going well [then everything else is fine], I’m a football person. Many were saying that Iran isn’t safe, that it’s not the right place, among other concerns. I’m happy here; I enjoy my time in Iran. No issues,” he stated.
Currently, Esteghlal ranks eighth in the league table with 15 points, trailing leaders Tractor by 13 points, as they gear up for their next match against Aluminium Arak at Imam Khomeini Stadium on Friday afternoon.
