Mamelodi Sundowns’ coach, Miguel Cardoso, has conveyed his admiration for goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, who plays a pivotal role in generating scoring opportunities for the team.
This appreciation followed Williams’ swift recognition of Kutlwano Letlhaku positioned on the flank, which enabled Letlhaku to cut inside and assist Iqraam Rayners in netting the sole goal of the match, ensuring the Brazilians clinched a 1-0 victory against Raja Casablanca in the CAF Champions League on Sunday. This match also marked the debut of coach Miguel Cardoso.
“Having a goalkeeper of this quality is essential,” Cardoso remarked.
“When we start our attacking plays, contributions from the goalkeeper, full-backs, and midfielders create countless opportunities.”
“Being able to assess the whole field from the goal is crucial, and Ronwen has proven he can do just that.”
“This capability enables us to explore a range of strategies. If our adversaries press us aggressively, the goalkeeper may find fewer spaces to exploit.”
Following his second assist, Williams made his way to Morocco to receive two honors: CAF Inter-Club Player of the Year and CAF Goalkeeper of the Year at the CAF 2024 Awards.
Despite the victory, the Portuguese manager acknowledged that his team still has significant progress to make to achieve their desired standards.
“I believe we are not yet at the level we aim for, as we should improve our control of the game with the ball and discover space more effectively,” stated the former coach of Espérance Sportive de Tunis.
“However, the commitment we showed is something that can be enhanced when we earn victories. It was vital to build upon that energy and dedication.”
“I think it’s our time to have faith in one another, which we already do. Therefore, let’s keep working hard, prepare for the upcoming match, analyze it, and showcase our abilities.”
“Our squad is extensive, filled with committed players, as seen by the bench celebrating. Even those not in the matchday squad joined in with the celebrations, alongside the injured players, which brings me immense joy.”
Sundowns will aim to increase their lead at the top of the Betway Premiership against Orlando Pirates at DHL Stadium on Wednesday (19:30).
