What happened with the European Super League proposal previously?

The original idea for a club-centric league to take place during weekdays and weekends faced fierce backlash and was ultimately dismissed after its announcement in 2021.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham were part of the 12 clubs that initially expressed interest in joining.

In a notable development for European football, the Premier League teams were set to collaborate with AC Milan, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus, and Real Madrid.

The ESL remarked that the founding clubs aimed to establish a “new midweek competition” while still “competing in their respective national leagues.”

Nevertheless, in response to significant criticism 32 months ago, nine of the 12 founding members quickly pulled out.

This backlash included opposition from prominent figures in England such as the then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the Royal Family, represented by Prince William, the president of the Football Association.

Nonetheless, the idea has gained new traction.
