PRESENTER Isa Guha issued a live apology after inadvertently calling an Indian cricketer a “primate.”
The BBC presenter was providing commentary for Fox Sports during the third Test match between Australia and India when her comments sparked controversy.
Bowler Jasprit Bumrah took five wickets on the second day, and in her commentary, Guha aimed to praise his skills by stating it surpassed human capability.
However, her wording resulted in criticism as she stated: “Well, he’s the MVP, isn’t he? Most valuable primate, Jasprit Bumrah.”
The following day on live television, Guha, whose heritage traces back to West Bengal in India, expressed her remorse.
She commented, “Yesterday during commentary, I used a term that could be interpreted in multiple ways.
“First and foremost, I genuinely apologize for any offense I caused.
“I hold myself to very high standards regarding empathy and respect for others.
“If you review the entire context, my intention was only to offer the highest praise for one of India‘s finest athletes, someone I deeply admire.
“I am a proponent of equality and have committed my career to fostering inclusion and understanding within the sport.
“I intended to highlight the importance of his achievements, but I chose the wrong words. For this, I sincerely apologize.
“As a person of South-Asian background, I hope that people recognize there was no malice in my words.
“I wish this incident hasn’t overshadowed what has been an exceptional Test match so far, and I eagerly anticipate its continuation.
“Once again, I am truly sorry.”
Indian cricket legend Ravi Shastri praised Guha for her response, stating: “First and foremost, she’s a courageous woman. To apologize live on air takes immense bravery.
“You heard it straight from her, so as far as I’m concerned, it’s a closed matter. We are all human and capable of mistakes.
“To acknowledge a mistake and say ‘I’m sorry’ shows strength. She has demonstrated that; let’s move forward.”
Aussie legend Adam Gilchrist echoed Shastri’s sentiments, adding: “We all respect your professionalism, integrity, and sincere compassion for all those you engage with.
“Well done; you have our unwavering support.”
