Leeds attempted to sign the 19-year-old this summer and are now aiming to work out a loan-to-buy agreement.

Essugo has made 25 appearances for Sporting during his formative years.

Over the summer, former manager Ruben Amorim opted to loan him out.

He is currently competing in LaLiga with Las Palmas.

This season, Essugo has participated in 10 matches for his loan club.

He scored his first goal last month against Mallorca.

In other developments, Leeds are on the verge of signing Australian goalkeeper Robbie Cook after a successful trial.

Cook, 17, has drawn interest from Manchester United and Sunderland.
