Mamelodi Sundowns’ manager Miguel Cardoso has shared his vision for the perfect captain at Chloorkop, highlighting the abundance of seasoned professionals and leaders within the team who are ready to take on responsibilities.

The current club captain, Themba Zwane, is presently out of action due to an Achilles injury sustained during Bafana Bafana’s 1-1 draw with Congo Brazzaville in October, and he is expected to be sidelined for an extended period.

In Zwane’s absence, goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has taken on the captain’s role, leading the team from his position – a duty he also carries out at the national level after being named skipper by Hugo Broos.

While the Portuguese coach has not indicated any intentions to change the captaincy for the reigning Betway Premiership champions, he does have a clear idea of the type of leader he envisions for his squad.

“I value captains who can assist the coach in guiding the team, displaying leadership by influencing their teammates’ actions on the field. This encompasses their behavior, how they treat opponents, and their interactions with referees,” Cardoso stated.

Cardoso also stressed the significance of having multiple leaders within the team, encouraging players to step up alongside the captain to promote a culture of teamwork and solidarity. “I want every player to adopt the mentality of a captain; that’s crucial. Everyone should share in the responsibility, so the captain is just one among many rather than the sole leader. I believe our players are capable of this, and we’re focusing on a collective approach,” he explained.

“When a captain or one of the leaders, whether it be Themba [Zwane], Denis [Onyango], Ronwen [Williams], or Teboho [Mokoena], calls for action, it serves to reinforce the team’s character. If that character is already strong, there is less need for intervention.

“This suggests that every player can have the right attitude, and sometimes, it’s about emphasizing that attitude at the right moment. We maintain a very straightforward environment in the locker room, and Themba stays actively involved,” added the former Esperance de Tunis coach.

Cardoso’s first challenge with Sundowns will be against the Moroccan giants, Raja Athletic Club, in the CAF Champions League at Loftus Stadium on Sunday (15:00), with both teams keen to earn vital points.
