Ronwen Williams, the vice captain of Mamelodi Sundowns, admitted that watching his former coaches, Rulani Mokwena and Manqoba Mngqithi, leave was a tough ordeal for him.
The Brazilians parted ways with Mokwena at the end of the previous season, following an unsuccessful campaign in the CAF Champions League, MTN8, Carling Knockout, and Nedbank Cup. The former Orlando Pirates assistant coach subsequently joined Wydad Athletic Club right after leaving Sundowns.
Although Sundowns granted Mngqithi the chance to coach the team, they ultimately decided to sever ties with him this week. The club has now decided to appoint Portuguese coach Miguel Cardoso. Williams recently shared his thoughts on the coaching changes affecting Bafana Ba Style.
The ex-SuperSport United goalkeeper expressed that saying goodbye to both coaches was difficult, but they have learned to accept the situation. “Of course, it’s hard to part with someone who feels like family,” Williams commented.
“Nevertheless, in football, this is our profession, and we must uphold professionalism. It was tough at first, but the players are aware of their responsibilities at Mamelodi Sundowns.
“We cannot question their choices; all we can do is concentrate on our duties, which involve playing football. Our goal is to excel and help Mamelodi Sundowns reach new heights.”
Meanwhile, the Brazilians are gearing up to face Moroccan giants Raja Club Athletic this Sunday in the Champions League. The Bafana Bafana captain noted that the new coach hasn’t made significant changes to their playing style as they prepare for the match against Raja.
“The coach indicated that he wouldn’t implement many changes but would make some minor adjustments given the time constraints,” Williams added.
“In the past three days, we’ve been fine-tuning our style of play, concentrating on our defense, offense, and striving for unity as a team.”
“The coach has reviewed several of our previous matches; he understands our style and has analyzed the team. He acknowledges our strengths while introducing his own ideas and qualities. The players are adapting well, and we are optimistic about our performance on Sunday, considering our limited preparation.”
Both Sundowns and Raja are still searching for their first victory in this season’s Champions League group stage. The home team has managed two draws in their two matches, while Raja has recorded one loss and one draw from their two games.
