Kaizer Chiefs’ head coach Nasreddine Nabi is confident that the team is making strides in certain areas of their game, even though they have experienced a range of inconsistent outcomes this season.

The Soweto giants began the 2024/25 season on a strong note, with victories in their initial two matches of the Betway Premiership against Marumo Gallants and AmaZulu. Nevertheless, they faced a contentious defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns shortly after.

Amakhosi bounced back from the loss to Sundowns with an impressive 4-0 win over SuperSport United in the round of 16 of the Carling Knockout Cup. Unfortunately, their joy was short-lived as Masandawana knocked them out with the same scoreline in the quarterfinals.

Following this, the Glamour Boys secured a 2-1 win against Richards Bay, but then let a two-goal advantage slip to end in a draw with Royal AM, and were recently stunned by Polokwane City. Despite these setbacks, the Tunisian coach asserts that clear progress is evident.

“When you look at the statistics in the PSL, Kaizer Chiefs is the top team in South Africa for creating goal-scoring opportunities, showcasing our ongoing improvement,” Nabi noted.

“We are making progress in our build-up play and in crafting clear and tangible scoring opportunities.”

Nabi, who is charged with revitalizing Chiefs, has acknowledged the team’s defensive frailties but insists that the responsibility cannot solely rest on the defenders, highlighting the importance of teamwork.

“We work hard in training, but conceding goals has certainly been a struggle; nonetheless, we need to keep an eye on the overall picture,” emphasized the 59-year-old coach through his interpreter, assistant coach Cedric Kaze, who came onboard in October.

“When we don’t score, we give our opponents a chance to regain their confidence. Thus, we don’t want to pinpoint the blame solely on the defenders; we expect the entire team to enhance their efforts both in attack and defense.”

The Chiefs coach also shared that they are looking into market options to address their scoring issues, considering the addition of players who can help improve their conversion rate.

“We cannot create countless opportunities without a solid game model and strategy established in training. We are exploring various options to tackle this [goal-scoring] challenge, potentially bringing in someone who could offer a solution,” Nabi elaborated.

Chiefs will be back in action with an away match against TS Galaxy at Mbombela Stadium on Monday, aiming to improve their current ninth-place position. Galaxy remains undefeated in their last four league games, with two wins and two draws.
