Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has issued a bold warning to Moroccan giants Raja Club Athletic ahead of their upcoming CAF Champions League match.
The Tshwane club managed to secure a 1-1 draw in their recent group stage encounter against AS FAR in Morocco on Saturday.
Iqraam Rayners, a former forward for Stellenbosch, scored the only goal for the Brazilians. Currently, Mngqithi’s squad is in second place with two points from two matches, while leaders AS FAR are ahead with four points.
The Brazilians are gearing up to face fellow Moroccan rivals Raja in matchday 3, which will take place this Sunday at Loftus Versfeld Stadium. Mngqithi warns Raja to prepare for a tough contest, highlighting that his team is a formidable force when playing at home.
“This is yet another game that we must analyze thoroughly,” Mngqithi stated.
“What I can assure you is that playing at home will always be a challenge for any team that visits us. At this moment, our focus is on securing wins, and I believe we have set ourselves up quite well.
“Moreover, the draw between Raja and AS Maniema Union has benefited us within the group. While we would have preferred to gain three points against AS FAR, in football, one must accept the results.
“I’m very satisfied with my players’ performances, and I anticipate an even stronger showing at home.”
In other updates, the former Golden Arrows coach expressed confidence in achieving victory over AS FAR in South Africa during the second round, provided they maintain their current form.
“It will be a different scenario; that’s a commitment I can make to you,” Mngqithi added.
“If we can duplicate our performance against AS FAR in their atmosphere with all their supporters present, I truly believe we will emerge victorious.”
This important match is scheduled for January 2025 and will serve as the final group stage game for both teams. Before this, the Brazilians will travel to DR Congo to face AS Maniema Union.
