Chinese snooker star Wu Yize endured appalling racism during his performance at the Shoot Out tournament.
The 21-year-old athlete was up against Elliot Slessor, whom he bested with a narrow margin of 46-43.
During a pivotal moment in the frame when both players were cautiously navigating around the yellow ball, the atmosphere intensified.
As Wu got ready to take his shot, the animated crowd tried to throw him off.
After Wu completed his shot, one audience member went too far.
This individual was overheard exclaiming “Egg fried rice,” causing an awkward hush among the other spectators.
Egg fried rice is a staple in various Chinese dining establishments and takeout venues.
This was not the first time audience behavior had been questioned at the Shoot Out in Leicester.
In a prior match featuring Slessor against Mark Joyce, fans were heard cheering for Gregg Wallace.
Some spectators even sang, “There’s only one Gregg Wallace.”
The embattled MasterChef host has been accused of making inappropriate comments to several women and is currently under investigation by Banijay, the production company behind MasterChef.
Wallace has categorically denied these accusations.
Naturally, fans quickly began comparing Slessor, who is bald, to Wallace during his match with Joyce.
The tournament, which concluded with Tom Ford as the champion, has come under fire due to the crowd’s rowdy behavior.
With rules distinct from those of standard snooker, players compete in a single frame while adhering to a 10-minute shot clock.
Unlike traditional snooker events where spectators typically remain quiet, this tournament encourages fans to be vocal.
