DAN ASHWORTH was reportedly “escorted” out through a hidden exit at Old Trafford after finalizing an agreement to leave Manchester United.

The sporting director’s time with the club has come to an end just five months after assuming the role, as outlined in an article.

Manchester United made substantial efforts to sign him over the summer, paying Newcastle £3 million for his services.

However, following critical discussions with CEO Omar Berrada after the 3-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest last night, Ashworth resigned by mutual consent.

According to Manchester Evening News, he appeared “grim-faced” as he walked through the press room yesterday.

He was “escorted” out through an “alternative exit” by security staff and United’s chief operating officer Collette Roche.

Ashworth did not leave via the usual directors’ entrance or the Stretford End tunnel.

Journalist Samuel Luckhurst remarked on social media: “In hindsight, perhaps he was escorted out against his will.”

Ashworth and other senior executives were responsible for offering Erik ten Hag a new contract, only to part ways with him just 14 games later.

They also oversaw a summer transfer season that saw the club invest £200 million on players including Leny Yoro, Manuel Ugarte, Matthijs De Ligt, Joshua Zirkzee, and Noussair Mazraoui.

The 53-year-old director previously expressed that he “liked” the squad at the start of the season.

However, SunSport revealed last month that the substantial spending and Ten Hag’s lackluster performance sparked a blame game among the board.

Crystal Palace chief Dougie Freedman is now considered the leading candidate to replace Ashworth, having been mentioned for the position in the past.
