Jose Riveiro, head coach of the Orlando Pirates, highlighted the necessity of a strong home start in this season’s Champions League as they pursue the coveted title.
The Pirates commenced their Champions League group stage with a victory, achieving a 2-1 away win against the formidable Algerian side, CR Belouizdad, last week.
Next on the agenda for the Buccaneers is a clash against reigning African champions, Al Ahly, this Saturday during the second matchday of the tournament.
In their opening match, Al Ahly emerged triumphant with a 4-2 victory over Stade d’Abidjan.
Riveiro, the Spanish tactician, emphasized the significance of performing well at home as they aim to make an impact in the Champions League this season, underscoring that the unwavering support from fans can make a significant difference.
“Our aim is to commence our home fixtures on a high note; we are determined to compete fiercely and ensure we have a substantial crowd supporting us throughout the season, particularly in this tournament, when we play in Orlando,” Riveiro remarked on Friday.
“It’s not merely about the weather; it’s about the trust our supporters place in us. This Saturday, their role is crucial because they want nothing more than to see our team succeed. This is our advantage, and we are fortunate to have loyal fans cheering us on.”
“We will need our fans to rally behind us for this match as we expect a tough 90 minutes ahead, and their steadfast support is essential.”
As it stands, Riveiro’s team occupies second place in Group C, with the Red Devils leading on three points. The teams are currently divided by goal difference, and the victor on Saturday will take the top spot in the group.
