Following a stint with Amiens in Ligue 2, Carroll signed with the prestigious club Bordeaux, which is currently playing in the fourth tier.

The former players of Newcastle and Liverpool is relishing his new life on the other side of the Channel.

Having five kids back in England, the frequent flights from Bordeaux to London played a crucial role in Carroll’s decision to move.

“My best friend is a pilot with easyJet,” Carroll shared with The Times. “So I’m on staff travel and I get flights for 19 euros (£16).”

The Geordie became a local legend at Newcastle after rising through their youth ranks before moving to Anfield in January 2011.

Carroll’s £35 million transfer to Liverpool at that time established him as the most expensive English player ever.

Arriving at Merseyside with an injury and content at Newcastle, Carroll found it challenging to adapt.

“It wasn’t easy, I was still young,” he reflects. “I stayed in a hotel and I hated it. I was alone and had to spend my time there by myself.

“I didn’t know anyone. I was in that room all day, every day, driving myself mad.

“I was injured when I signed, so my connection with the team was nonexistent. I was thinking, ‘I didn’t want to come here, and no one is speaking to me.’ At 21, I was depressed.”

Carroll later transferred to West Ham before making a return to Newcastle in 2019.

After two seasons at St James’ Park, he dropped down a division to Reading, where he rekindled his love for the game.

Despite his achievements at the highest level, Carroll remains down-to-earth, enjoying life alongside his teammates at the fourth-tier Bordeaux.

He even enjoys cooking for his teammates and is planning a special meal for them soon.

Carroll remarked, “I might go for a Christmas theme or make classic Whitley Bay fish and chips, complete with homemade beer batter and tartar sauce. I really love cooking.

“Today, I had lunch with eight of the lads at a tiny Thai restaurant, and they’re a fantastic bunch. One of them speaks good English, but the majority are French speakers. I can understand much more than before. The players here are supporting me.”
