Banyana Banyana suffered a defeat in their second international friendly against Jamaica, going down 2-3 in a thrilling match that saw five goals scored in Montego Bay on Monday evening.

The away encounters against Jamaica marked the end of the year for coach Desiree Ellis’ team as they prepare for their title defense in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) set for next year.

The Sasol-supported South African Senior Women’s National Team took an early lead with Linda Motlhalo finding the back of the net through a collective effort in the 19th minute. The guests showcased their skills in the first half, ending with a 1-0 lead at halftime.

The South African defense effectively held off Jamaican star Khadija Shaw for the majority of the match, with the Reggae Girlz only leveling the score in the 58th minute after her replacement.

Vyan Sampson netted the equalizer following a melee in the Banyana Banyana penalty area. Jamaica then surged ahead with a second goal in the 63rd minute, courtesy of Drew Spence.

The Reggae Girlz extended their lead to 3-1 in the 76th minute when McKenna took advantage of a defensive lapse from the visitors.

Amogelang Motau capitalized on a mistake by the Jamaican goalkeeper during stoppage time to score for the visitors, reducing the margin.

“We executed our game plan well, and although we were without a striker due to last-minute adjustments, I feel the players performed admirably today,” remarked Dr. Ellis.

“We expected Jamaica to play a physical and aggressive game, but we adjusted our strategies accordingly. Our players maintained the team’s structure, controlled the game from an offensive standpoint, and our defenders did exceptionally well despite conceding goals.”

Banyana Banyana is set to begin their lengthy return journey to South Africa on Tuesday afternoon, with an expected arrival in the country by Thursday evening.
