MATS HUMMELS dramatically netted an equalizer in stoppage time during his first European match following the Champions League final, securing a point for Claudio Ranieri’s side.

The 35-year-old German player slotted in a cross from ex-Manchester City star Angelino in injury time, bringing an end to Spurs’ defense.

He hadn’t played in a European competition since his side’s loss to Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League final at the end of the previous season.

Spurs were looking for essential three points to enhance their chances of automatic progression to the Europa League‘s knockout phase.

Son Heung-min’s penalty kick and a goal by Brennan Johnson, either side of an Evan N’Dicka header, looked to secure the win.

However, amidst numerous opportunities for both teams, Ranieri salvaged a crucial point during his return to England, thanks to Hummels.

The former Chelsea and Leicester City manager, now 73 years old, just recommenced his third stint at Roma earlier this month.

Fans were keen to see which version of Spurs would present themselves after a season marked by inconsistent displays.

Would it be the squad that brushed aside Manchester City 4-0 in their last match, or the one that allowed Ipswich to claim their first Premier League victory of the season?

Nonetheless, Postecoglou’s Tottenham team consistently provides entertaining matches, and this particular game was no exception.

Spurs had a great chance to assert themselves early when Hummels fouled the impressive Pape Matar Sarr in the box within the first three minutes.

Initially, referee Glenn Nyberg did not award a penalty, but VAR prompted him to review the incident at the monitor, resulting in a reversal of his decision.

Captain Son calmly converted from 12 yards, sending keeper Mile Svilar the opposite direction.

This was only Ranieri’s second match in charge, having sustained a narrow 1-0 defeat against Serie A leaders Napoli, led by former Spurs manager Antonio Conte.

Paulo Dybala made an early impact with a shot that was well saved by Fraser Forster, who was stepping in due to Guglielmo Vicario’s broken ankle.

However, Forster could do nothing to prevent Roma’s equalizer soon after, as N’Dicka headed Dybala’s free-kick off the crossbar and into the net.

Ranieri thought his team had scored again shortly after, but Stephan El Shaarawy’s brilliant volley was narrowly ruled offside.

Spurs retaliated with a Johnson strike that was cleared off the line by ex-Manchester City player Angelino.

Then, in the 34th minute, the hosts regained the lead with a lightning-fast counter-attack.

Sarr made a perfectly weighted pass forward, allowing Dejan Kulusevski to dash down the wing and cross for Johnson, who finished with his first touch.

Postecoglou celebrated with a fist pump as the Welshman marked his ninth goal in 19 appearances for Spurs this season.

It could have been even better before halftime, but Son blasted over after the ball rebounded to him following Kulusevski’s shot that hit the post.

Ranieri’s team found the net twice early in the second half, yet both goals were ruled offside due to striker Artem Dovbyk’s position.

Pedro Porro then redirected an Angelino volley onto the crossbar before hitting the woodwork himself with a dangerously taken free-kick.

Spurs struck the post for the third time when Dominic Solanke’s header found the woodwork.

This misfortune proved costly, as Forster made two outstanding late saves, but Roma’s persistence paid off when Hummels netted as the match drew to a close.
