Lampard has signed a two-and-a-half year contract with the Sky Blues, who are currently in 17th place in the Championship.

A club statement stated: “Coventry City is thrilled to announce the hiring of Frank Lampard as the new Head Coach.

“The 46-year-old has agreed to a two and a half year deal with the Sky Blues, and he will manage City for the first time this Saturday against Cardiff City at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

“Frank will be backed by two new assistants, Joe Edwards and Chris Jones, with whom he has collaborated extensively before.

“Lampard has had a distinguished career in football, both as a player and manager.”

Coventry’s owner and Executive Chairman Doug King remarked: “I am thrilled that Frank Lampard has accepted the position of Head Coach at our club.

“Frank has experience in the Championship and understands what is necessary to be successful in this league.

“His experiences at Chelsea and Everton will undoubtedly provide our talented squad with insights into what it takes to excel at the highest level that we, as a club, are aiming to reach.”

Lampard is expected to address the media later today.

Lampard, 46, last managed in June 2023, when he served as Chelsea’s interim head coach for two months.

I played with Frank Lampard at Chelsea and we never lost… but I’d still prefer to line up alongside Steven Gerrard

During his brief stint, Lampard led Chelsea to just one win in 11 matches.

This lackluster interim period followed a successful season and a half at Chelsea from 2019 to 2021, where he secured a top four Premier League finish and reached the FA Cup final.

The former England international also managed Everton from 2022 to 2023, where he played a pivotal role in keeping the Toffees in the Premier League.

His managerial journey began in the Championship with Derby County, where he narrowly missed promotion to the top tier before earning his first position at Chelsea.

Lampard’s debut match will be this Saturday when Coventry hosts Cardiff City at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Fans have already welcomed him online, showing support for the Premier League legend.

One fan stated: “Time to rally behind him now. Super Frank’s Sky Blue Army.”

Another commented: “He has always been better than Gerrard.”

A third fan expressed: “Finally! Let’s go!”

And a fourth added: “Welcome Frank! It’s time to move forward and start a new chapter.”

Fan Reaction: Lampard’s Appointment Viewed as a Disappointment

By Alex Johnson

Replacing a club legend like Mark Robins, who created countless memorable moments for the Sky Blues supporters, was never going to be an easy task. However, the news of Frank Lampard’s arrival has not been well received among Coventry fans.

During his Q&A with fans after dismissing Robins, owner Doug King voiced his aim to find a tactically astute head coach capable of optimizing the most expensively assembled squad in Coventry City’s history.

Ending up with Lampard, who relied heavily on former assistant Jody Morris during his time at Derby County, feels like a disappointment. His track record lacks league titles or widespread acclaim for an attractive style of play.

Moreover, with reports of King’s connections to the Redknapp family – as Harry is Lampard’s uncle – it raises doubts about whether a serious search was conducted to find the ideal head coach in the first place. Doug King has faced tough scrutiny from fans this month and once again has significant questions to respond to.

While Coventry fans will undoubtedly support Lampard and give him a chance, to imply he is a superior choice to Mark Robins after just one playoff appearance and a 9.1% win percentage in his latest role is quite far-fetched.
